Description:

Mental health professionals are on the front lines and, in many cases, have the initial contact with the individual(s) who has experienced traumatic stress. They are routinely called upon to serve survivors of major disasters and distress, war, childhood physical and sexual trauma, rape, violent crime, and other forms of traumatic events. The training delivers the Salutogenic bio-psycho-social aspects of traumatic stress and discusses in detail the biologically correct responses to psychological, emotional, social, cultural, biological, spiritual, and familial traumatic stress. 

The  training provides take-away evidence-based, best-practice clinical interventions and techniques for the Assessment, Safety & Stabilization, and Remembrance & Mourning phases of trauma treatment.

The two-day training will involve an analysis of the various defense mechanisms and other coping skills individuals employ during and following the experience of traumatic stress. Key approaches and interventions include:

  • Crisis intervention
  • Critical incident stress debriefing
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

This training examines the 10 core competencies that increase the healer’s skill and create transformation in the lives of the trauma survivor. Participation in this training would lead to a holistic and systemic understanding of traumatic stress and provides skills for immediate use in a variety of counseling settings.

Training Objectives:

  • Determine  clearly the nature of traumatic stress, grief, & loss and their sequelae.
  • Compare the various theoretical models of traumatic stress, grief & loss.
  • Summarize traumatic stress, grief & loss from biochemical, psychological, social & spiritual perspectives.
  • Examine the key current interventions employed for the treatment of traumatic stress, grief & loss.
  • Demonstrate the importance of self-regulation for treatment and professional resiliency.
  • Identify appropriate treatment interventions to address the comorbidity of traumatic stress in various diagnoses
  • Discuss the rationale for establishing “good enough” safety and stabilization, and list several self-regulation technique
  • List several therapeutic methods to desensitize and process trauma.

Dr. Robert Rhoton:

Dr. Robert Rhoton, CEO of Arizona Trauma Institute and President at the Trauma Institute International possesses a rich history of experience in the mental health field. 
Dr. Rhoton has supervised multiple outpatient clinics, juvenile justice programs, and intensive outpatient substance abuse programs for adolescents, day treatment programs for youth and children, adult offender programs and child and family therapeutic services.
Dr. Rhoton served as president of the Arizona Trauma Therapy Network from 2010 through 2012. Dr. Rhoton was a Professor at Ottawa University in the Behavioral Sciences and Counseling Department whose primary interests were training counselors to work with traumagenic family dynamics, child and family trauma, and non-egoic models of treatment.
Dr. Rhoton is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress and collaborates and consults with numerous Arizona agencies fine tuning their understanding of trauma and the impact of developmental trauma on the individual and family. He works internationally with organizations to improve the delivery of trauma treatment services.
